Ubuntu Multiple USB-Ethernet mapped to specific eth##

Hey guys,

I have multiple USB-Ethernet adapters plugged into my Ubuntu laptop. I am just wondering if I can map these USB adapters to specific interface manually. For example, USB1 to eth1, USB2 to eth2, etc. Also, these adapters are plugged into a powered USB hub.

The reason why I would like to do this is, I don't want these USBs to change their eth# mappings if the laptop got disconnected from the power source or need a restart.

Thanks,

thm

Managed kiosk solution

If you can talk them into DeepFreeze, go for it!!! We use it and love it.

A couple other options would be M$'s solution to steady state:

There's also SteadierState:

If it's an option, you might want to think about vdi too.

Edit: I knew I'd seen a discussion about this, just had to dig it up:

Python / JavaScript gurus - I need some assistance...

gurus - I need some assistance...
Hey all, I have an issue I'm trying to work out in Python. I'm pretty new to programming/scripting, so bear with me on this.

There's a site my team uses quite a bit at work; the Bluecoat Site Review page. This page takes user input in the form of a URL, and then displays that website's categorization according to Bluecoat. It's located here : WebPulse Site Review Request

Anyway, what I want to do is write a command-line script that sends a request to this page in the form of an HTTP POST, and parses the response to display only the site categorization of the website submitted by the User.

In a perfect world my script would receive the response and search the document for a certain string; if found, that string would be printed to standard out. The issue I'm having is that Bluecoat's response does not give the site categorization as a string literal - the response is actually sent back as a variable value. That value is not directly reported back in the source code of the page, only the variable is. And I don't know how to grab the value of this variable with Python to display to the User. Here is the return result as it appears in the source code of the result:

"This page is currently categorized as "

I've been using Python's "Requests" module to make the HTTP request because it seems to have the most elegant syntax; however I'm open to learning/using something else like urllib2 or mechanize if it is more appropriate for this situation. Any ideas?Indeed, it appears to be JSON:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1
Content-Type: application/json
Date: Tue, 03 Dec 2013 22:12:08 GMT
Content-Length: 1130

Currently Reading: Violent Pythonimport json
import pprint
data = json.loads([ObjectName].content()) //decode the json into an object you can work with.
pprint(data) //if this looks funny, decode it again with data = json.loads(json.loads([ObjectName].content()))

You should be able to go by name from there

Your Start in Security

As most of you know I've gotten my first start in a security (like) role. Initially, it was a lot of software testing and then it began to flow into auditing for regulatory compliance. The regulatory compliance side will be continuing for the length of my career. But now I am weaving into the actual hard security side of things (today I loaded Kali on a laptop, setup the wireless card, and started cracking a few wireless access points in the lab). My issue is, I'm being thrown into a lot of different projects at once all requiring slightly different skills (this isn't a complaint as each day is different and I've been made the head of two major projects at this point which is great). My question is, how do you specialize in an environment such as this? Each time I think I know what I should be studying/researching a new item presents itself and I need to switch gears.

I'm definitely in a position where if I can't do something or needed help I can let my boss (and several layers above him) know without it being an issue. Generally speaking they are fairly surprised I was able to handle what has been on my plate thus far. I guess my hang up, as docrice put it, is the jack of all trades in security label. I'm hoping things calm a bit and that we get the numbers to break things off into a separate group (basically, we are legally allowed to make an Office of Internet Gaming, but the numbers have to be there). If that happens then I think I could specialize and not be so helter-skelter. Thanks guys!

Cisco 2851s worth getting?

Not sure if this is the right section to post it in but through work we have a few 2851s that have been collecting dust. I asked about them and the sales guy said he would sell them to me for $21 a pop but to double check with my boss as he may just give them to me for free. I know Cisco is moving away from the ISR gen 1 and focusing on gen 2 with all the new features with IOS 15.2 and such. My question is would it be worth it to stock up on these for labbing purposes? Or should I just save on the electric bill and stick to gns3.

Let me apologize in advance if punctuality and spelling is incorrect. I mostly respond on my samsung galaxy 2 when im free and fixing little details are a pain.

I have a buddy who isn't technical and is looking for something that meets all of these requirements:1) Is able to handle minecraft 2) Great school use laptop 3) No more than $400.00 4) Preferably windows 7 I've done quite a bit of looking into this but would like to see if you folks could provide some insight. Requirement number 3 kills me when searching.

Good choice on win 7, metro is a real PITA with touchpads. I am not sure how difficult it will be to find a laptop with Win 7 though. Maybe its still offered if you order direct? Seems like everything ships with 8 now.

I like the AMD APU's for something like this. The A4 or A6 series should be in the price range from HP. Something sub $400 will probably have 4Gb of ram, but another $50 can double that. Should be able to handle MC on medium settings no problem, max settings with a tiny bit of stutter when rendering the "long view".

Does it really take a lot to be able to run Minecraft? To be honest, I don't know anything about the game...besides having seen people play it at coffee shops. But it looks like 8 bit graphics in a 3D environment...I can't imagine it being too process intensive. Won't pretty much any netbook running Win7 do the trick?

**Excuse my ignorance is my assumption about Minecraft is way off-base**

You've got it right about minecraft, it's not a very demanding game at all.

I would agree with --chris-- about snagging an HP with the A4 or A6 APU. They can be had in that price range. Another option is to check eBay for lightly used laptops. You might be able to find something with a bit more power for less if it's 6-12 months old and lightly used. I pickup used laptops on eBay all the time, fix them, and resell them for a small profit. You can find some that are well taken care of.

Lenovo. We had them at my old job and I swear by them. You can get a decent one with Windows 7 for around $400.

Lenovo or Dell would be the safe pick. Work bought me a Vizio only 4 gbs of ram (weak I know) ssd and i7 mobile processor. I really like the way it boots and how it feels on my lap. The hinges are really strong too which is hard to find for your price point as silly as that might sound. I can't stand wobbly hinges UGH.

**Excuse my ignorance is my assumption about Minecraft is way off-base** On minimum settings, its a very low demand game. On max settings (which really just pushed out the render distance to almost infinity) it can make my 260 Nvidia's fan spin up to 90%. It use to eat up ram as well, but I think they worked on that since the early days.
