Fine, community service for AWOL footballer

SINGAPORE – Singapore international defender Shakir Hamzah has been handed a $4,000 fine and 30 hours of community service after a Disciplinary Committee hearing this evening at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) headquarters at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The 20-year-old footballer hit the headlines last weekend when it was revealed he had been slapped with four days in detention for after going AWOL (absent without leave) while serving National Service. On May 17, Shakir had without his superiors’ consent travelled to Kuantan where he played in the LionsXII’s Malaysian Super League match against Pahang.

The FAS had suspended Shakir from all football activities pending the hearing and this sentence looks set to free him up for action on Saturday in MSL clash between the LionsXII and Johor Darul Takzim which could decide the destiny of the MSL title.
